New Delhi: In yet another blow for the Aam Aadmi Party, the Enforcement Directorate has arrested its Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Singh, in a money laundering case linked to the investigation into the Delhi liquor policy. Searches were being conducted at the Delhi residence of the MP since early on Wednesday morning.
This is the third major arrest from the party. Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain was arrested in May last year on charges of laundering money through four companies that were allegedly linked to him.

The biggest setback for the party, however, came in February this year, when then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and close Arvind Kejriwal aide Manish Sisodia was arrested by the CBI in the alleged liquor policy scam.

The raids against Mr Singh took place after he was named by businessman Dinesh Arora, an accused in the case, who later turned ‘approver’.

Mr Arora had claimed that the AAP leader had introduced him to Mr Sisodia, who was the excise minister.

Newly appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai on Friday claimed that Rahul Gandhi will contest from Amethi in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, triggering discussions around the high-profile constituency that has long been a traditional seat for the Gandhi-Nehru family. Union minister Smriti Irani and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi made his parliamentary debut from the Amethi constituency in 2004 and won the next two Lok Sabha elections from the same seat before losing it to BJP’s Smriti Irani in 2019. Sonia Gandhi, an MP from Rae Bareli, is the only Congress parliamentarian from UP at present and the grand old party would be eyeing to wrest Amethi from Smriti Irani. Rahul Gandhi is at present MP from Wayanad in Kerala.

Surrounded by party workers and leaders, who gathered at the airport as he arrived from Delhi, Rai said, “Rahul Gandhi will definitely contest the Lok Sabha election from Amethi, the people of Amethi are here.” When asked about Union minister Smriti Irani, who defeated Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in the last election, Rai said she appears frustrated. “Smriti Irani seems frustrated. She said she will get sugar at ₹13 per kg, did she manage it? People from Amethi are here, ask them,” Rai said. Smriti Irani vs Rahul Gandhi According to HT’s sister publication Live Hindustan, Smriti Irani’s active engagement in Amethi has strengthened the BJP’s presence in the region. While BJP legislators hold sway in Jagdishpur, Tiloi and Salon assembly constituencies, the Samajwadi Party holds its grip over Gauriganj and Amethi seats.

Irani’s supporters in Amethi Lok Sabha seat highlight the developmental work carried out by both the central and state governments. Rahul Gandhi has visited Amethi three times since his defeat in the 2019 elections, and the possibility of him contesting again from the constituency has kept the local party leaders’ hopes alive. Gandhi has maintained a visible presence in Amethi, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic when he provided relief materials to the region.  ABOUT THE AUTHOR Follow the latest breaking news and developments from India and around the world with Hindustan Times’ newsdesk. New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday slammed Narendra Modi for laughing and cracking jokes in parliament during his response to the no-confidence motion, saying such behaviour does not behove the prime minister while Manipur “has been on fire for months”.
Speaking at a press conference, Gandhi said that Prime Minister Modi devoted just two minutes to Manipur in a speech that was more than two hours long.
“I watched the PM yesterday speaking for two hours laughing, joking, lagaoing naaras (raising slogans). The prime minister seems to have forgotten that the state of Manipur is on fire and has been on fire for many days,” Gandhi said.

“The prime minister sitting in the middle of Parliament was shamelessly laughing… The issue was not Congress or me, the issue was what is happening in Manipur and why it was not being stopped,” he said.
Gandhi said his remarks that Prime Minister Modi and home minister Amit Shah had “murdered Bharat Mata in Manipur” were not hollow. “Hindustan has been murdered by BJP in Manipur,” he said.

“When a person becomes PM, he should not speak like a petty politician. It’s tragic to watch PM Modi speak for 2 hours on the Congress, opposition. It doesn’t do justice to his position… The only conclusion I want to draw is that the PM has tools in hand but for some reasons, he refuses to use them. There are clear reasons why PM is not going to Manipur,” Gandhi said.
He said the Army can bring peace in 2-3 days but the government was not deploying it. “I am not seeking Army’s intervention. All I am saying is that Army can stop this nonsense in two days. It is not my position to say which tool PM Modi will use” the Congress leader said.

Rahul Gandhi delivered his first speech at Lok Sabha on August 9 after being reinstated as an MP. However, he didn’t remain in the House to listen to the response, as he had a scheduled event in Rajasthan at 3 pm. Upon departing the Lok Sabha, he repeated a gesture reminiscent of his famous hug and wink during the previous no-confidence motion against the PM Modi government in 2018. It is believed that Rahul Gandhi blew a flying kiss while exiting.
Union Minister Smriti Irani, along with several BJP MPs, voiced their strong objections following an alleged flying kiss gesture made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi towards BJP MPs in the Lok Sabha. Although the incident was not captured on camera, it reportedly occurred as Rahul Gandhi was leaving the Lok Sabha premises after delivering a speech concerning the no-confidence motion on Manipur.

Smriti Irani, without directly mentioning Rahul Gandhi’s name, denounced the act by stating, “Only a misogynistic man can exhibit the gesture of a flying kiss towards female parliamentarians. This action sheds light on the lineage he originates from and reflects the attitude his family and party hold towards women.” Smriti Irani said that such behaviour had never been witnessed in the country’s Parliament before. BJP has questioned the appropriateness of the behaviour, labeling it as “chichora type behaviour,” as reported by HT. This parliamentary episode has resonated across major platforms such as TikTok, Twitter, Reddit, Instagram, Telegram, YouTube, and Facebook.

Here are some diverse reactions it drew from netizens on these different platforms, while some were hilarious involving memes, the others condemned the act suggesting it to be against the code of conduct in the parliament. X’s (formerly Twitter) reactionsOn Twitter, numerous users have crafted memes that humorously parody the incident, while others have voiced their disapproval of such conduct within the parliamentary arena. Certain individuals have even raised concerns about the appropriateness of such behaviour for an elected representative, fearing that it might compromise the decorum of the esteemed institution.
One of the user disapproved Rahul’s behaviour, calling him Pappu he said that he was not in Thailand or Las Vegas.

The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill 2023 was approved today by the Lok Sabha. The Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act of 1991 is being modified by the proposed bill. It gives the Central Government the authority to enact regulations governing the affairs of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, including the duties, pay, and other terms and conditions of employment of officers and employees. The National Capital Civil Service Authority’s constitution also has a clause about it. The Delhi Chief Minister, Delhi’s Chief Secretary, and Delhi’s Principal Home Secretary make up the authority. The Authority will advise the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi on official transfers, postings, and disciplinary actions. In May of this year, the Center introduced an Ordinance in this regard.

Home Minister Amit Shah responded to the debate on the Bill by expressing his satisfaction that opposition members had finally joined in on the discussion in the House today. He emphasized that nine bills had already been passed during this session and said that the opposition parties simply participated in today’s debate in order to defend their recently formed coalition. He charged them of only caring about maintaining the coalition and disregarding issues that affect people. He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will retake office despite this alliance of the Opposition. He emphasized that the Bill complies with all relevant constitutional provisions. He explained that the Supreme Court had ruled in its decision that the Central Government could pass legislation pertaining to Delhi. He emphasized that the Constitution clearly grants Parliament the authority to pass laws for the national Capital. He emphasized that while Congress and the BJP had previously held positions of power in Delhi, there was no desire to seize them. The goal of every administration that was established, he said, was to fulfill the needs of the people, so there were no conflicts.

Without specifically identifying the Aam Aadmi Party, he claimed that a party came to power in Delhi in 2015 with no intention of doing anything but fighting for the city’s residents. According to Mr. Shah, the problem is not obtaining the authority to carry out transfer postings but rather gaining control of the vigilance agency in order to cover up corruption in the National Capital.

The Government is prepared for a lengthy discussion on Manipur, the Home Minister added in another statement. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Congress opened the discussion by labeling the Bill as being against the nation’s central government. Additionally, he questioned the government’s haste in bringing a service-related Ordinance, asking why it was necessary. He also questioned the motivation behind the Bill’s introduction, claiming that similar efforts to undermine the authority of other governments will be made.

Kalyan Banerjee of TMC alleged that this legislation is an attack on the federal structure. He stressed that the States are not subservient to the Union. He said, the government should heed the mandate of the people as residents of Delhi must have a voice as to how they are governed. Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lallan Singh of JD(U) opposed the legislation and accused the Centre of trying to rule Delhi indirectly.

Ramesh Bidhuri of BJP said that several promises have been made by the Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi which are still unfulfilled. He alleged that AAP is involved in corrupt practices in Delhi. P. V. Midhun Reddy of YSRCP spoke in support of the Bill. He termed it as unique saying the Bill aims to restore certain power to LG.
BJD’s Pinaki Mishra supported the Bill saying Parliament has plenary jurisdiction to enact laws regarding Delhi. Supriya Sule of NCP opposed the Bill terming it undemocratic and unconstitutional. Shashi Tharoor of Congress, Meenakshi Lekhi of BJP, Harsimrat Kaur Badal of SAD, NK Premachandran of RSP were among those who participated in the debate.

The Supreme Court on August 4, 2023, of India granted relief to Rahul Gandhi, the prominent political leader and former Congress president, by staying his conviction in a defamation case related to a remark he made about the surname of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The case had garnered significant attention in the political arena and the media. A three-judge Bench headed by Justice B.R. Gavai also comprised of Justices P.S.

The defamation case was filed against Rahul Gandhi in [Year] by a member of the ruling party, claiming that his remark was defamatory and intended to malign the Prime Minister’s reputation. The controversy began when Rahul Gandhi made the comment during a public address, sparking heated debates across the nation.

In response to the conviction, Rahul Gandhi’s legal team appealed to the higher courts to review the judgment. Finally, after a long legal battle, the Supreme Court intervened and granted a stay on the conviction, allowing Rahul Gandhi temporary relief from any legal consequences resulting from the remark.

The Supreme Court’s decision received mixed reactions from the public, with some praising the upholding of free speech, while others criticized the remark as disrespectful towards the Prime Minister. The case’s outcome also highlighted the delicate balance between freedom of expression and defamation laws in India’s legal system.

As the matter continues to be of national interest, political analysts and experts anticipate further developments in the case. It remains to be seen how this verdict will impact political discourse and the legal framework concerning defamation and freedom of speech in the country.

The BJP top brass has often stated that “unnecessary remarks” on cultures, communities and cinema are no-go zones for its leaders. In the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, controversial remarks on Mahatma Gandhi by BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur had forced the Prime Minister to say he would never be able to forgive her for the statements. In May last year, BJP national spokesperson Nupur Sharma triggered a massive controversy that transcended India’s borders with objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad. She was eventually suspended from the party. The Prime Minister had addressed the NDA lawmakers as part of efforts to boost coordination among its constituents and shape the ruling bloc’s strategy for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. In a controversial move that has sparked heated debates across the nation, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh referred to the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi as a “historical mistake.” The statement has triggered strong reactions from various religious and political groups, raising concerns about communal tensions and cultural heritage.

The Gyanvapi Mosque, located in the holy city of Varanasi, holds immense historical and religious significance. It stands adjacent to the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most sacred sites for Hindus worldwide. The mosque’s history dates back to the 17th century when Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb ordered its construction, leading to the partial demolition of the original Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

During a recent public address, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath made a contentious remark, calling the existence of the Gyanvapi Mosque a “historical mistake.” He claimed that the mosque’s construction was a symbol of the Mughal era’s oppression and religious intolerance towards Hindus. Yogi Adityanath’s statement has drawn polarizing reactions from various quarters.

Criticism from Muslim Leaders: Muslim leaders have strongly condemned the Chief Minister’s remarks, viewing them as an attempt to incite communal tensions and undermine religious harmony. They assert that the Gyanvapi Mosque has been an integral part of Varanasi’s cultural fabric for centuries and deserves equal respect and protection.

Political Responses: As expected, the issue has become highly politicized, with various political parties taking sides. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has supported Yogi Adityanath’s stance, emphasizing the need to preserve Hindu heritage. On the other hand, opposition parties have accused the Chief Minister of playing divisive politics for electoral gains.

The statement made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, referring to the Gyanvapi Mosque as a “historical mistake,” has added fuel to an already contentious issue. While there is a need to respect and preserve the cultural heritage of all communities, it is crucial to find a common ground that fosters communal harmony and mutual understanding. The ongoing legal battles over the site’s ownership will likely determine the future course of this contentious issue.

An important move has recently been made in the political landscape of the nation by Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge, a well-known member of the Indian National Congress party. In an effort to test their support for a no-confidence move against the present ruling administration, he has contacted a number of political parties and potential allies. This action is being taken in the midst of mounting dissatisfaction with how the administration is handling important matters and a slew of scandals that have triggered heated national discussions.

A no-confidence motion is a potent parliamentary tool that enables the opposition to voice its disapproval of the policies and actions of the current administration. If such a resolution is approved, the incumbent administration may be toppled, which would either result in new elections or the establishment of a coalition government. A successful no-confidence vote might have significant effects on the country’s governance and political landscape given the current political atmosphere.

The no-confidence motion’s progress are being eagerly watched by Indian citizens. They are anxious to observe how their elected officials serve the interests of the country and how their issues and complaints are addressed during legislative debates. The public has high expectations and believes that political leaders should put the needs of the people ahead of partisan considerations.

The Indian political environment is still active and filled with anticipation as Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge pursues his outreach attempts to win support for the no-confidence vote. As the motion’s fate hangs in the balance, the upcoming days will see heated conversations, negotiations, and disputes. The result of this crucial political maneuver will unquestionably influence the destiny of the nation and determine the direction of its governance.
